Trying to catch perch with a weight of approx. 1 kilo in the water systems around Trollhättan in Sweden is both exciting and challenging. We are talking about the "striped knight" who is well over 10 years of age and extremely experienced and shrewed. A relentless predator perfectly designed for its mission.

There is no way to guarantee a kilo-catch, but by following the tips below, we dare say that there is a realistic chance.

  Medium sized perch

Equipment

Any old spinning rod will do the job for you, but attention must be paid to the bait used.
We have found out that the following types of bait are highly relevant:

  • If you have access to live crucian you may consider yourself a winner - big perch go mad!
  • ABU Reflex white 18 g (see below, 3rd from the top is super)

  • ABU Reflex orange 18 g
  • possibly also the 12 g Droppen (blue signal colour) or an ABU Copper Atom

Location

The map below lists some spots where there is a possibility to
catch big perch casting from land June-September.

  1. Downstream the powerstation of Vargön, western shore (Jutatorpet)
  2. Close to the outlet of the Hojum powerstation in Trollhättan
  3. Along the shores of the Ålstadsnäs peninsula
  4. Häggsjön - small lake along the road Upphärad - Dunevallen (not on map)

Here's Mike at spot no. 4, waiting for a bite.

Mike again, this time with a sturdy Scardinius erythrophtalmus catch.

In fact, trying to hook big perch may occasionally result in a pike-perch going for the bait. This close relative of the perch requires a slightly different fishing technique.
